Orange County Regional History Center, The

History Center staff will join your class for a live virtual lesson and accompanying activities. Over the period of a week, our workshop bin will rotate among the classes in your grade level, and we’ll facilitate a scheduled live virtual lesson for each classroom. Program highlights include the integration of hands-on STEM challenges and the use of museum replicas, games, and art as mediums for teaching history.

History on the Go Workshops include:

• Box of activities, games, and replicas
• Live virtual lesson taught by History Center staff
• Pre-recorded, 30-minute guided tour of the History Center’s permanent exhibitions that can be incorporated into your social studies lesson before or after your program
• Easy-to-clean objects with instructions and materials for disinfecting between use in each classroom

Available workshop themes:

Florida’s Indigenous People: Learn about the culture and traditions of the Timucua and the Seminoles, as well as the affect of European colonization on Florida’s native peoples. Students will conduct a STEM challenge using a variety of building materials and have the opportunity to touch replicas and primary sources including conquistador armor, Seminole patchwork, animal furs and more! (Recommended for grades 2-4)

Expedition Florida:  Learn about the European explorers’ motives for gaining control of Florida and the hardships the pioneers later faced as they fought to survive on the Florida frontier. Students will play modified versions of Sorry Sliders, do a STEM challenge using Lincoln Logs and various building materials, and explore pioneer replicas. It’s a history lesson they’ll never forget! (Recommended for grades 4-5)

Florida’s Fight for Freedom: Learn about Black leaders in Florida who played an important role in paving the road towards equality, as well as the history of Black communities in Florida from Fort Mose to Eatonville. Students will work as a team to complete a town-building STEM challenge, and create their own take-home Florida landscape artwork! (Recommended for grades 3 and up)
