Safe Place

Program description

Our children’s mental health is in crisis. Unfortunately, their needs are not being properly met. Bullying can threaten students’ physical and emotional safety at school and can negatively impact their ability to learn.

Safe Place is a 30 minute play written by Puerto Rican playwright Gabriel Villegas and is based on the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Stop Bullying Program. The play will teach students how to identify bullying behavior and stand up to it safely. Also to teach our children how to display confidence when dealing with conflict.

Synopsis

This play tells the story of Diego, an immigrant who has experienced adverse experiences during his childhood. He is having a hard time making friends at school.

Runtime: 30 minutes

Option #1 – $450 per show (+$300 additional show)

up to 25 students to be performed at the teachers classrooms during regular class period.

Option #2 – $1,500

Runtime: 45 minutes

to be presented at your school theatre.

About the author

Gabriel Villegas is a 42 yrs old Puerto Rican playwright. He was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Puerto Rico. In 2016, he obtained a Master of Arts in Spanish with a concentration in Linguistics. He is a doctoral candidate at University of Central Florida. His research involves the application of simulation-based learning strategies to promote adult bilingual language development. Since 2012, he has been serving as a Simulation Training Specialist at the VA Simulation, Learning, Education, Assessment Research Network (SimLEARN). He has designed and implemented simulation instructional, clinical train the trainer programs, resuscitation training and currently manages a body of curricula and best practices that improve health care for our nation’s Veterans.

In 2017 he founded the theatre company Teatro for the Soul in the city of Orlando, FL. It is a non-profit organization with status 501c3. Their mission is to promote the Spanish language, advocate for immigrants and improve the mental health and quality of life through the transformative power of theatre. In 2023, he established the Orlando Conservatory for the Performing Arts (www.conservatorioorlando.com) where acting classes are taught to children, teenagers, adults and seniors in Spanish in the city of Orlando, FL.

He is also a Spanish professor at Valencia College where he teaches Elementary Spanish I and II.
